2012-02-02Peter Lynn aims for kite sailing craft developments

Kite sailing: Peter Lynn says it is competitive, we believe him

The Peter Lynn laboratory has successfully proved that kite sailing will be reality in the upcoming years. Lynn, one of the greatest kite experts in the world, is trying to make kite powered boats truly competitive.

"Kites have two major advantages over conventional sails. The first and most significant is that they can be rigged to a boat's hull so as to cause no heeling", explains Peter Lynn.

"The second advantage that kites have is that because the kite is not rigidly connected to the boat; it can fly at higher altitude where wind is stronger and more consistent, and it can be 'worked', that is, looped to develop much more pull for its size than is available from a fixed sail", he adds.

Despite these challenging advantages, there are also a few cons. Not having a mast to pull the sail up on, wind is needed for kites to be launched and kept in the air.

Also, when the wind is weak (3 knots or 5 km/h), "it's not possible to usefully fly any current traction kite, while competing boats with conventional sails can still drift, getting slowly, but inexorably ahead".

Kite Surf Tour: great waves, splendid locations

2012-01-26Kitesurfing life begins at 60 for Richard Branson

Richard Branson: life begins at 60

Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, is a busy man but he has always time for one of his favourite hobbies. No, not women. The answer is kitesurfing.

The 61-year-old business mogul says "life begins at 60" and he is probably right. The footage of Richard Branson kitesurfing in open waters, off the Necker Island, is quite impressive.

Despite the choppy waters and waves, Branson shows he is in shape and ready for long distance kitesurfing races. Ludo Brockway, Richard's nephew, jumped in the helicopter and captured great images that can be seen here.

"I also wanted to use it as an excuse to speak again about kitesurfing. To me it's the best sport in the world. You can start at eight and keep at it until 80. It's not as expensive as you might think", says Richard Branson.

2012-01-24The 73-year-old Floridian kitesurfer

Louis Gomez: the youngest kitesurfer | Photo: Brandon Kruse/WSJ

Louis Gomez is 73 years old and he's an avid kitesurfer. Yes, it's not 37, but 73 years. This former software engineer for JP Morgan Chase discovered kiteboarding when he was 65 and decided to give it a go.

"I told my wife that sport just didn't exist when I was younger," Mr. Gomez tells The Wall Street Journal. "To heck with that, I wanted to try it because I wanted to do it. It was a challenge."

The young wind addict had his first contact with kitesurfing on Lake Geneva, Switzerland, eight years ago and, there you go, he went for it. Despite the requirements of the sport, Louis Gomez was already a sportsman. He was a skier and racquetball player so his joints were prepared for strong impacts.

In 2008, Gomez had to undergo knee-replacement surgery but a few months later he got back to the waters for weekly training schemes. He lives in Pinecrest, Florida.

2012-01-23Kiteboarders aim for the Evoikos Kolpos Channel in Greece

Sandrine Werner: that is how she loves kiteboarding

A group of intrepid kiteboarders will try to cross 22 kilometres of the south Evoikos Kolpos Channel, in Greece, on the 4th of February 2012.

Ilias Katirtsigianoglou, Spyridon Sofianos and Sandrine Roussos Werner, co-founder of the Global Kiter Foundation, will be joined by a team of volunteers to raise funds for charity and mark the World Cancer Day.

The crossing will take them from Marmari (Evia) across the channel to Loutsa. The team will be supported by volunteers from the Greek PWC Racing Association, the Nautical Club of Palaio Faliro and the Omada Aigaiou (Aegean Sailing Team) who will be assisting with jet skis, RIBS, sailing vessels, lifeguards and donations.

All volunteers have experienced cancer directly or indirectly through their siblings. The concept of the crossing helped Ilias to overcome the challenge he was faced with when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in December 2009.

2012 Lord of the Wind Showdown: watch those lines | Photo: Morgan Edwards

Johnny Heineken is the 2012 Lord of the Wind. The world kite racing champion has been crowned the best wind rider between kiteboarders and windsurfers, in Los Barriles, Baja Mexico.

The US sailor took the first place in the kiteboarding course race and a second place in the slalom series. Adam Koch kept the silver honors and he was followed by Bryan Lake, in third place.

Kiteboarders got the most out of the 12-14 knot winds in the long distance race and dominated the competition. The event opened with 16-22 knot winds and a rolling swell. A total of 40 heats were run and kiteboarders had the opportunity to do a big air contest.

In the last day of competition, the wind only showed up at 2pm, but the competition was intense. The 2012 Lord of the Wind Showdown is clearly one of the best wind sports contest in the world and is putting Los Barriles in the center of the extreme action.

2012-01-19Helen Skelton sets new kite skiing record

Helen Skelton: kiteboarding in the snow

Helen Skelton, an English television presenter, has set a new kite skiing world record. The 28 year-old reporter set the fastest time ever for 100 kilometres covered by kite ski, according to the Guinness World of Records.

Skelton completed the distance in 7 hours and 28 minutes. The analysis based on GPS data sent via satellite from the Antarctic, where she is close to finishing the 500 miles to reach the South Pole.

Helen Skelton learned to kitesurf in the summer of 2010 with Ned Taylor, the British Freestyle champion and BKSA senior instructor. The TV presenter picked things up very quickly and the flat shallow water of the River Exe provided the ideal learning conditions to grasp the kite skills she would be needing to do this current adventure.

The world record, though, is not universally accepted. Several professional extreme explorers say that there are many examples of men and women who kited faster and longer on the polar caps. Apparently, Ronnie Finsaas has snow kited more than 500 kilometres, in less than 24 hours.
