Central Bay

Treasure Island

SFBA's TI Access Team (comprised of David Nelson, John Boshe and Bill Robberson) has been working with the San Francisco Planning Department (SFPO) to realize permanent windsurfing rigging and launching access at the north end of the Island. While members of SFPD are quite supportive of SFBA's vision and Implementation plan, public access to Treasure island (TI) remains limited and the Navy still has significant presence and influence on the base. Three things we can bank on are 1) San Francisco will become the major tenant of this magical place at some point in the not-to-distant future, 2) the north end is great for all types of windsurfing, including slalom, course boards and bump & jump yahooing, and 3) the SFPD is serious about incorporating windsurfing access into the City's plans to build additional shoreline protection into the existing berm 5/dikes.

Fort Baker

As mentioned in a previous newsletter, Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) and Golden Gate National Parks Association (GGNPA) are planning for the future of Fort Baker. Bob Stevens and I met with their planners in early May '97 to learn more about their Ideas and options for the Fort and to discuss regional recreational Interests. Although, SFBA has high hopes for significant access (launch/retrieval) improvements in the wharf area, it's estimated that the L'S Army is most likely one or more years away from departing the base (as its prime tenant) and releasing management to the National Park Service. None-the-less, Bob Stevens is heading the SFBA Fort Baker team to represent windsurfing access interests at the north end of the bridge. So, if you're a frequent Fort Baker sailor or would like to be, contact either Bob Stevens (415 450-3194) or me for more information.

During this transition from the US Navy to SF SFBA is working with both entities to establish a greater presence, including installation of a windtalker. We're attempting to gain limited SFBA access for the interim, and will keep you informed as things progress. We hope to have the base entry Issue worked out with the Navy any day now, and parking/rigging coordination resolved with the San Francisco Police Academy sometime soon: If you'd like updates, please call or provide your email address to David Nelson at (510) 251-6876.

Crissy Field

SFBA's Crissy Field Committee (John O’brien, Jay Valentine, Jeff Bunch and Bill Robberson) are pleased to report that we continue to work closely with representatives from the GGNRA, GGNPA and their landscape and building design consultants on the Crissy Field site and facilities design. The design work is more or less completed, and the drawing depicts the future for Crissy Plaid. While it is difficult to depict some of the details at this scale, you can make out the placement of the restrooms, showers, safety lookout bluff and other related items such as the windbreaks and the reinforced and irrigated turf windsurfers will be able to park and rig throughout the turf and asphalt surfaces, and the restrooms contain four stalls for men and women (each), with enclosed space for changing clothes / wetsuits and outside showers. If you'd like a more detailed, point-by-point description of the future Crissy Field, we'll be presenting the design in Its entirety with plenty of time for questions and answers at the members meeting Just prior to the season opening party at the St. Francis Yacht Club on Friday, April 17th. So come early and don't be late, because we're going to start the presentation promptly at 7:30 p.m.

With regard to the design and construction schedule, the first earth-work Is scheduled to begin in August of this year (1998), with construction of the East-end facilities to be completed by spring (1999). Although we're not too excited about earth-movers and flying dust during prime windsurfing time in August and September, we figure that if the construction actually begins on time, the big machines will be idle by 3:30 each day regardless, we'll be actively engaged In the Implementation of this "phased" construction. We'll keep you informed as work and milestones progress, and hope to have final copies of the restroom facilities at the season opening party/meeting.
