Eastbay News

Last fall the Berkeley Marina posted additional signs prohibiting parking along the east and west sides of the dry storage compound. Their reason -- easier boat access to the compound. The net effect to the windsurfing community is reduced parking and rigging areas. This recent move combined with previous parking losses along the grass on the east side, further reduces convenient parking and rigging for windsurfers.

Several regular windsurfers have approached Marina Management to discuss the situation. The marina appears open to suggestions which enhance the parking and windsurf rigging areas. Two proposals currently being discussed are being pursued concurrently. The first creates a new rigging area about 14' wide, running the length of the south side of the dry storage compound. The area would be protected by a low barrier made of old railroad ties or telephone two rows of cars along the entire parking lot. The second option reconfigures a portion or possibly the entire dry storage compound for windsurf use. There are plans to move all boats to an enlarged dry storage area on the north side of the marina. The, goal is to have one of these proposals implemented before summer; both options provide improved conditions for rigging and parking.

To maximize our effectiveness, It Is Important that all windsurf sailors be considerate of Marina Management and work together to provide a common voice as these negotiations progress. A petition is being prepared to communicate our desire for increased rigging area and more convenient parking.
