SFBA Newsletter - June 98
Sailing Sex and the Environment
El Nino may be responsible for the unusual spring weather (tornados in Sunnyvale?), but
it is up to each and every one of us to sail safely and be prepared to assist others. SFBA
can promote windsurfing safety and education all day long, but ultimately it is up to you
to make safe sailing a habit, to make safety real through action. Whether you've had your
own wake-up call or not, we encourage you to read the following first-hand account
(survival story) by Carlos Merino, in which he eloquently describes his March 28th lesson
of a lifetime. And while you're at it, take a peek at the safety tips by Carla McGrew.
The water is our environment, and this season SFBA is teaming up with the Bay Area
Stormwater Management Agencies Association (BASMAA) and the Bay Area Dischargers
Association (BADA) to bring attention to the causes of local water quality degradation and
to promote individual actions that will help to prevent this pollution. Studies show that
the cumulative impact of contaminants in stormwater runoff (motor oil and pesticides which
wash off our streets and lawns into gutters and storm drains) and wastewater pollutants
(such as oven cleaners, home pesticides and paints) which enter the Bay via home and
building drains are the real culprits when it comes to water pollution. SFBA is also
working with the San Francisco Baykeeper to promote its pollution prevention activities
and to build support for improved San Francisco Bay water quality.
If you're looking for an update on Crissy Field, please refer to the last newsletter;
and while we're at it we'd like to thank Mr. Glen Angell from the Golden Gate National
Parks Association (GGNPA) for his presentation at our season opening party on April 17th.
On the hot topic of renewed Treasure Island access, SFBA representatives are working with
local officials and anticipate some form of limited access this season... we will keep you
informed as things progress.
