Whale Watch 2001 During 2000 we had frequent sightings of whales in the San Francisco Bay with a number of whales feeding among the windsurfers just offshore from Crissy Field. Unfortunately, we also had a record number of whale strandings during 2000. The number of strandings in California last year was 3-4 times higher than normal. The public can help researchers by providing sighting information:
The Oceanic Society is currently studying all whale activity in the San Francisco Bay. Please report any sighting of whales including, location, size, time, number, and activity or direction of travel. Mud plumes typically indicate feeding activity.
The Marine Mammal Center is managing a rapid response network to examine sick whales and dead whales. If you see a whale (or any other marine mammal) that is lifeless or appears in distress, please call The Marine Mammal Center. If you would like to assist in these efforts, please consider programming the numbers listed above into your mobile phone. |
